Paul Dwayne Bishop

Paul Dwayne Bishop of San Saba, Texas, passed away on August 2, 2021, at the age of 78. Dwayne was born in Coalingo, California, on November 10, 1942, as the first of three children in a loving Christian family. After graduating from McKinney High School in McKinney, Texas, he attended Abilene Christian University where he graduated in 1965 with a degree in Music Education.  While teaching in Graham, Texas, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the 5th Marine Division Band at Camp Pendleton, California. His enlistment ended in 1970, and he earned a Master’s Degree in Education in 1972.  In 1998, Dwayne retired after forty years of teaching music and band in Texas schools, including Graham, Lampasas, Rockport, Dimmit, Dalhart, Mason, Menard, and San Saba.

While attending Abilene Christian University, he met his future wife, Mary Micheale Welch (Mikie).  They were married at Lake McQueeney, Texas, in 1967.  They were married for 54 years and were lifelong partners in everything that they did.  They have two sons, Michael and Buddy.  The two most important things in Dwayne’s life were his faith and his family.  He and Mikie are long time members of the San Saba church of Christ and have served the church in every town in which they have lived.  Dwayne most recently served as an elder for the church in San Saba.

Dwayne loved golfing almost as much as he loved falling asleep on a Sunday afternoon with a golf match on television. He enjoyed traveling, and he was a connoisseur of New Mexican foods smothered in green chile sauce. He baked a mean apple pie with RedHots candy as the not-so-secret ingredient, and he told truly terrible granddad jokes with his very dry sense of humor.

Dwayne was preceded in death by his father, Glenn, and his mother Faye.  He is survived by his wife Mikie, his two sons Michael and Buddy, their wives Andrea and Jessica, his three grandsons Zachary, Alec, and Reid, his brother Phil Bishop (spouse Hilda), and his sister Cindy Brown (spouse Charles).  In lieu of flowers, the family would like for donations to be made to the Uganda Mission Fund in Dwayne's memory.  If you would like to contribute, please send checks to the following address.
