Darin was born on Sunday, March 24, 1968, in Abilene, Texas to Herbert Kimbrough Johns and Judith Anne Brannan. He married Karen Lyn Gatny June 7, 2003, in Abilene, Texas, and they have spent 18 amazing years together.

Darin was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church and devoted to his faith. He loved to share his faith with his family and friends. He was a member of the church praise band and had a deep passion for music. Darin was the band director at Andrews High School for 7 years and touched so many lives during his time there. During his 32 years as a high school band director, he also spent time at Franklin Middle School in Abilene, Jim Ned High School in Tuscola, Ballinger High School in Ballinger and Colorado High School in Colorado City, TX. He had been a member of the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) since 1997 and served as the ATSSB Region 6 Coordinator for many years. He was honored to use his ability as a band director to push students to their potential which led him to be able to take the Jim Ned band, Colorado High School band, and the Andrews Mighty Mustang band to State Marching Contest! Many say they think he is the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) and the best band director they knew. He helped many of his students pursue a career in music and was always supportive of all his students. He also touched the lives of many students that were not even in the band. Darin was a gifted musician and very well known; he could play just about any instrument he would pick up. His most recent musical instrument love was the bass which he played in the church praise band, on music teams for Walks, and with his Christian praise band Getchasum. Darin loved to build speakers and speaker boxes in his spare time. He loved to feel the music, the heavy bass coming out of the speakers was always his favorite. Darin’s greatest love was his family. He was a kid at heart and enjoyed working on cars, dirt bike riding, and burning rubber with his boys. He enjoyed taking his family to Possum Kingdom, and spending time with his grandchildren. Darin was a faithful husband, amazing father, and a friend to all, he will be dearly missed.
