Assistant Band Director | Kermit ISD | Michael Vargas | 3A/1C | salary schedule + days + stipend | mlvargas@kermitisd.org | Kermit ISD has an immediate opening for an assistant director for the remainder of the 2024-25 school year. This position will assist with the high school marching band and concert band, direct the junior high band, and team teach beginners. Beginner classes (6th grade) are split into separate woodwind, brass, and percussion classes. Prior experience is recommended but not required. The ideal applicant would have a strong pedagogical background, strong marching background, possess a Texas teaching certificate, and be able to work in a small school setting in a competitive 3A program. All applicants will be considered. The high school band program has seen several successes over the past few years including Division 1 ratings in Sight Reading in 2021 and 2023, Division 1 ratings in Marching and Concert in 2021-22, and a Division 1 rating in Concert in 2024. The junior high program also received a Division 1 rating in Sight Reading in 2022. Kermit ISD is a 3A/1C district located in West Texas about 45 miles west of Odessa. We have supportive administrators who provide for the needs of the band program and want to see the students succeed. The Kermit ISD band program has been steadily growing over the past few years. In 2020-21, the total number of students involved in the band program grades 6 -12 was around 100. Currently, the program consists of 205 students in grades 6-12. Last year, a bond was approved by voters that includes renovations to the junior high band hall, security upgrades at all campuses, construction of a new turf practice field at the junior high, renovations to the football stadium, and other improvements.
