The middle school tryout music and scales for the school year 20-21 will be set at the Spring 2021 meeting.

The following are not allowed at middle school auditions: piccolo, e-flat clarinet, alto clarinet, contra clarinet, and bass trombone. Instrumentation for all the region bands is found on the region web page.

Doubling (trying out on more than one instrument) is not allowed at both middle school or high school tryouts.

In case of conflicts with SAT and ACT testing, students may compete but must be present by 2:30 p.m. No taped auditions are allowed. Conflicts with school sponsored events will be allowed, but the region coordinator must be notified in advance at least 24 hours in advance of the tryouts. All other exceptions will be dealt with on an individual basis by the region coordinator.

Students who enter middle school tryouts must be in the 7th or 8th grade. Students who enter high school tryouts must be in grades 9-12. Entry fees are as follows:

All directors for each district must be present to judge. In order for students to tryout, membership in TMEA and ATTSSB is required as listed in the state guidelines. In the event of a director being unable to judge, the director must find a substitute, pay that substitute, and notify the region coordinator prior to the beginning of the tryouts. Substitutions are NOT allowed unless the region coordinator has been notified. No person will be paid to judge tryouts if they are a full time director in Region 18/26.

All deadlines are set by TMEA and ATSSB and should be strictly followed. Late entries will be accepted up to the day of the contest. Jazz entry fees are $17.50 per student plus a $25.00 school fee. Middle school and high school entry fees are $12.50 per student.

Valve trombone is not allowed.

A minimum of 50% of each etude must be heard. The number of scales to be heard will be set at the directors meeting prior to the tryouts.

Students who qualify for area but do not qualify for a region band will not be placed in the band.

Jazz Band-Improvisation will part of recorded auditions only. The day of auditions the next person will be given the opportunity to tape. Once the tapings are concluded the day of auditions, no alternates will be moved up to tape.

All area fees are paid to the region. The region will send in one check for each area contest.

Clinic/Concert

Middle School will have two bands. They will be named Symphonic Band and Concert Band. Chair placement begins with the Symphonic Band. The jazz band will have one band. The high school will have 3 bands. The instrumentation will be listed on the region web page. The bands will be named Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band. Chair placement begins with the Wind Ensemble.

Students are required to attend all rehearsals and the concert in order to receive a patch. Each student may receive one patch. Students may be disqualified for leaving rehearsals early. Conflicts with other organizations, personal schedule conflicts, etc. will not constitute a reasonable excuse for missing rehearsals or the concert. Athletic conflicts MAY be approved if the region coordinator is notified in advance. Students must attend ALL day Saturday and perform in the concert to receive a patch. The region coordinator must be informed in advance of any absences at rehearsals. Failure to do so could result in the student being replaced in the band. If a student becomes ineligible or ill the region coordinator will move the next eligible student up. Alternate students will be called to replace students not in attendance on Friday evening. Students who do not meet the rehearsal requirements will not receive a patch.

The clinic/concert is free to the public.
